Nearly 1 in 4 New Cars Registered in South Korea in H1 Were Electric

South Korea saw a significant surge in eco-friendly vehicle registrations during the first half of the year, with electric cars accounting for nearly 23% of all new registrations. Out of 857,000 newly registered vehicles between January and June, 199,000 were electric. When including hybrid vehicles, eco-friendly cars made up 57.6% of new registrations.

This trend reflects a broader shift in the country's automotive landscape. Cumulatively, eco-friendly vehicles increased by 13.1% to reach 3.95 million by the end of July. In contrast, internal combustion engine vehicles saw a 1.3% decrease, totaling 22.54 million. Notably, diesel vehicles dropped by 246,000 units.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport reported that South Korea's total vehicle registrations reached approximately 26.68 million by the end of July, a 0.6% increase from the previous year. This means there is roughly one car for every 1.92 people in the country.
