NEC faces vote manipulation allegations; ruling and opposition parties waste time on political disputes

South Korea's National Election Commission (NEC) is embroiled in a growing scandal, facing a mountain of allegations stemming from the June 3 local elections. Reports indicate significant discrepancies in vote counts across numerous polling stations, with some areas showing differences exceeding 20% between initial tallies and final results.

Further allegations suggest that NEC officials may have manipulated vote counts to conceal errors. Concerns have been raised about instructions allegedly given to local election commissions to adjust real-time vote counts, effectively allowing for 'real-time vote manipulation.' Instances of attempted concealment of incorrect vote entries have also surfaced in provincial and education superintendent elections.

Despite the gravity of these accusations, a special parliamentary investigation into the NEC has been paralyzed by partisan conflict. The main opposition Democratic Party and the ruling People Power Party are locked in a dispute over the timing of a recount of 2.47 million ballots from the Songpa district. This political deadlock has prevented any substantive inquiry into the NEC's alleged wrongdoings and delayed discussions on necessary electoral reforms.
