Neighbors rescue boy buried in sand at Lomas de Arena

An 11-year-old boy remains in an emergency ward in Santa Cruz after neighbors rescued him from a pit at Lomas de Arena, where he became partially buried in sand while playing with four friends.

The other children entered the pit but managed to get out without rescuing him. One of them ran for help, and a group of neighbors went to the site and found the boy trapped beneath the sand.

Noelia Rodríguez, the boy’s sister, said neighbors alerted the family. She said the incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon and that, by Thursday, the child still could not speak. He had woken up but could only babble.

The boy was first taken to a health center in the El Recreo area before being transferred to Japanese Hospital. His family said they could not afford the medical expenses and asked for public assistance through the phone number 73123017. Police said they were investigating the case on their own initiative and would determine whether someone’s criminal actions contributed to what happened.
