Ñemby Politics: Miguel Prieto Backs Blas Lanzoni, Calls Own Candidate 'Rebel'

Miguel Prieto, a presidential hopeful and leader of the Yo Creo party, has officially declared his support for Blas Lanzoni in the upcoming Ñemby mayoral election. This decision means Prieto is withdrawing his backing from his party's own candidate for the position.

Prieto described his party's candidate, Cheng Kuo, as "rebellious" for refusing to participate in a political measurement and subsequently declining to resign. Kuo had previously rejected Prieto's pressure to step down before the August 7 deadline, which would have removed his name from the ballot for the municipal elections on October 4.

The situation has created internal tension within the Yo Creo party. Prieto announced that his political team would convene on Tuesday to analyze and finalize a decision regarding the matter. He expressed confidence that a solution would be found, comparing the situation to broader efforts for unity within the Central Department.

Blas Lanzoni, who is receiving Prieto's support, previously served as mayor of Ñemby in 2006 before resigning to become governor of Central in 2008. He later served two terms as a senator from 2013 to 2023. The current incumbent mayor, Tomás Olmedo, who is facing charges for alleged embezzlement, is seeking re-election with the support of the ruling party.
