Nepal-China border braces for new floods as glacial lake swells

Rescuers continue to comb through mud and debris following a devastating flash flood that struck the Nepal-China border, as authorities issue urgent warnings about a newly formed glacial lake. The overflowing lake poses a significant risk of triggering further inundation in areas already ravaged by disaster.

Nepalese authorities have placed all security personnel, rescuers, and civilians involved in relief operations on high alert. They are prepared for immediate evacuation if necessary. "The rescue operation has not been suspended," stated Abi Narayan Kafle, spokesperson for the Nepalese police, to the Associated Press, emphasizing the ongoing efforts amidst the heightened state of readiness.

Satellite imagery indicates the new lake formed in the same area where a glacial detachment occurred on Wednesday, initiating a chain of events that led to the catastrophic downstream consequences. The Nepalese Department of Disaster Management reports that preliminary assessments suggest the river upstream has been dammed, creating an expanding lake that could breach its natural dam, causing sudden floods.

Scientists studying the Himalayas explain that the glacial collapse created several water bodies, with vast amounts of sediment still scattered across the region. "Another dammed lake has formed due to an ice and rock avalanche on August 26, and water has begun to drain from it," said Qiangong Zhang from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development. This lake, containing millions of cubic meters of water, is situated in a valley section with a relatively small elevation difference to areas downstream, raising concerns about its potential impact.

As the region grapples with a disaster that has claimed hundreds of lives and left over 1,500 missing, the possibility of another catastrophe is a major concern. "Due to high temperatures, glaciers are still melting intensely, and water is accumulating in various places because there is a large amount of sediment and rocks in the river's path," explained Jakob Steiner, a geoscientist at the University of Graz, Austria. Both Zhang and Steiner stress that these warnings must be taken seriously, especially as numerous rescuers are exposed to potential danger.
