Nepal edge Bhutan with a lucky goal in SAFF Women’s opener

Nepal began their SAFF Women's Championship campaign with a fortunate 1-0 win against Bhutan in Goa, India. The sole goal came in the 23rd minute from a corner kick. Gita Rana, positioned near the penalty spot, received the ball after a header from debutant Anita Lamjel. The ball deflected into the net off a Bhutanese defender, Dorji Edon, who was attempting a clearance.

The victory, however, highlighted Nepal's offensive struggles, especially in the absence of their main striker, Sabitra Bhandari 'Samba'. Bhandari is currently recovering from her second ACL surgery. In their previous encounter in 2024, Nepal drew 0-0 with Bhutan, marking a rare instance where they failed to score in the championship's history.

Beyond Bhandari's absence, Nepal also missed midfielder Preeti Rai and winger Sabita Rana Magar due to injuries. Magar is recovering from knee surgery, while Rai is expected to join the team later in the tournament. Despite these challenges, Nepal, a six-time runner-up, is expected to advance from Group A, which also includes Sri Lanka. They are likely to face India or Bangladesh in the semifinals.
