Nepal flood death toll climbs to 469; 1,545 rescued

Devastating flash floods in Nepal have claimed at least 469 lives, with authorities reporting 1,545 people rescued and injured. The disaster, which struck the Tibet-Nepal border on August 26, has left a trail of destruction across several districts.

Chitwan district has borne the brunt of the tragedy, recording 178 bodies recovered. Other severely affected areas include NP East with 110 fatalities, Gorkha with 44, and Nuwakot with 37. Rescue operations are ongoing, with police personnel deployed across the affected regions. However, 28 police officers remain missing amid the ongoing crisis.

In response to the catastrophe, the Government of Nepal has allocated NPR 25 million in cash for relief efforts. International support has also been extended, with the United States pledging USD 500,000 in assistance and the World Health Organization dispatching emergency medical supplies. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has established an Emergency Control Room to coordinate aid for foreign nationals affected by the floods.

The floods have caused massive loss of life and extensive infrastructure damage. The Trishuli-I project reported that 63 Indian nationals working there have been rescued, though 288 others remain uncontactable. Both President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have expressed solidarity with Nepal, with India offering humanitarian assistance.
