Nepal Flood Death Toll Climbs to 579, Missing Count Surges to 1,924 Amid Ongoing Rescue Efforts

Devastating flash floods in Nepal have claimed the lives of at least 579 people, with the number of missing individuals soaring to 1,924, according to the latest update from Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).

The casualty figures saw a sharp increase, with 41 additional bodies recovered within a few hours on Friday. Hospitals are treating 101 injured individuals, and a surgical medical team has been deployed to bolster relief efforts. The scale of the disaster is evident in the recovery of 233 bodies in Chitwan and 154 in Nawalparasi East, among other affected districts.

Search and rescue operations are being conducted by over 15,000 security personnel, including the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force. These efforts are focused on reaching stranded communities and locating those still unaccounted for. So far, 4,451 people have been brought to safety, including 191 rescued from a hydroelectric tunnel and 517 evacuated by air.

The missing count includes a significant number of individuals from hydropower projects (933), foreign nationals (517), and government and security personnel. Efforts to restore essential services are underway, with communications gradually being re-established and supplies being dispatched to affected areas via truck and helicopter.

Authorities have allocated significant funds for relief operations in the worst-hit districts. The government has released NPR 10 million each for Rasuwa and Nuwakot and NPR 5 million for Dhading, with an additional NPR 67.5 million allocated to 15 local levels. The ongoing rescue and relief operations highlight the immense challenge of addressing the aftermath of this natural disaster.
