Nepal flood death toll nears 700; China reports 7 deaths

The catastrophic floodwaters that swept through Nepal's Bhote Koshi basin have claimed nearly 700 lives, with recovery and rescue operations intensifying against a ticking clock. Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) confirmed 675 bodies recovered, while China reported seven fatalities, bringing the combined toll to 682.

Compounding the tragedy, almost 3,000 people remain missing or incommunicado. This figure includes 589 foreign nationals and 933 workers from the region's hydroelectric projects, according to the NDRRMA. Nepal's Tourism Board has stated that 184 tourists have been rescued alive, but 420 are still missing, with two Spanish citizens among those found safe.

The grim reality of the rising death toll has forced authorities into difficult decisions. With morgues overwhelmed and bodies rapidly deteriorating, local officials in districts like Nawalparasi East are beginning mass DNA sampling before burying unidentified remains in community forests. This measure aims to preserve potential identification for grieving families.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, with teams working to extract individuals trapped in mud and locate those cut off by destroyed bridges and roads. Nepal has reversed an earlier decision, now permitting international search and rescue teams to assist, particularly with tunnel operations, forensic identification, and DNA analysis. A significant challenge remains in accounting for the hundreds of workers missing from the impacted hydroelectric projects.

Meanwhile, the natural dam formed by flood debris, which had posed a significant risk to rescue operations, has largely subsided. Chinese water resource authorities report the reservoir is "practically emptied" with a normal flow, easing concerns about further catastrophic releases.
