Nepal Flood Death Toll Rises to 389

The devastating floods in Nepal have claimed the lives of 389 people, with local police reporting an additional 466 individuals injured or rescued. The Chitwan National Park area has been identified as the region with the highest concentration of victims, underscoring the severe impact of the natural disaster.

The catastrophe was triggered by an ice-rock avalanche on the morning of August 26. This event led to a sudden and dramatic surge in the Bhotekoshi River's water levels. The resulting deluge swept through multiple settlements, causing widespread destruction to homes, roads, and vital hydroelectric facilities.

In addition to the devastation within Nepal, the powerful mudflow also impacted a border checkpoint in the Gyirong County of China's Tibet Autonomous Region. Initial reports from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan indicated that, based on preliminary information from the Chinese side, no Kyrgyz citizens were among the dead or missing in the affected areas of Tibet and Nepal.

The scale of destruction highlights the vulnerability of communities in the region to extreme weather events and geological hazards. Rescue and recovery efforts are ongoing as authorities assess the full extent of the damage and provide assistance to those affected.
