Nepal flood death toll rises to 939 as number of missing falls

Nepal’s death toll from flooding in the country’s north and center rose to 939 on Monday, while the number of missing people fell to 3,925, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.

The latest figures recorded 36 additional deaths and 322 fewer missing people. Much of the change involved workers reported missing at hydropower projects, whose number fell from 933 to 639. Authorities believe many could be trapped in underground tunnels. Some 592 foreign nationals remain unaccounted for.

More than 21,000 security personnel are involved in search and rescue operations. The disaster authority said food and non-food supplies had reached affected areas through 37 trucks, 37 Bolero vehicles and nine helicopter flights.

By midday today, 5.87 billion Nepalese rupees had been deposited in the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund, distributed among nine commercial banks.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah said the government was providing financial assistance through a relief fund that has received domestic and international donations. He said 5.87 billion Nepalese rupees, equivalent to $38.59 million, had been deposited across nine commercial banks, with another $3.19 million placed in two banks.

Earlier on Monday, the number of people without contact had briefly risen from 2,502 to 4,247 as communications gradually returned to isolated districts and local authorities consolidated their figures. Including deaths recorded in Nepal and Tibet, the combined toll stood at 955, with 4,471 people still unlocated.
