Nepal Floods Devastate Pilgrimage Route, Survivors Recount Homes Engulfed by Mudslides

A catastrophic event unfolded in the mountainous border region between Nepal and China's Tibet, where massive landslides and flash floods have claimed at least 165 lives, with hundreds more missing. The disaster struck during the crucial pilgrimage season, significantly impacting both local populations and a large number of foreign travelers who use Nepal as a gateway to popular Tibetan pilgrimage sites.

Official figures confirm 165 fatalities and 468 individuals unaccounted for, including 393 foreign nationals. The scale of the tragedy is underscored by harrowing survivor accounts. Keshav Prasad Baral, a 68-year-old survivor, described the terrifying onslaught of mud and debris. Another survivor narrowly escaped by holding onto a mango tree, forced to watch his newly built home disintegrate under the force of the floodwaters. The region is a significant hub for religious tourism, particularly for Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains who visit sacred high-altitude lakes like Lake Mansarovar near Mount Kailash in Tibet and Gosaikunda Lake in Nepal's Rasuwa district. This timing, coinciding with the peak season and a full moon considered auspicious, meant a large influx of pilgrims, especially from India.

Initial reports suggested an earthquake might have triggered glacial collapses. However, the U.S. Geological Survey clarified that the reported 4.4 magnitude seismic event was likely caused by the energy released from collapsing glacial rock and ice, leading to the massive debris flow. Preliminary analysis of satellite imagery indicates a massive ice-rock avalanche occurred in the Lhende River basin, approximately 20 kilometers northeast of the Rasuwagadhi border crossing, unleashing the devastating flood. Rescue efforts are ongoing but hampered by difficult terrain, with several villages completely submerged and infrastructure, including bridges and homes, destroyed.
