Nepal floods: Hundreds missing after mudslide triggers catastrophic deluge

Rescue efforts are underway for hundreds of people missing after a devastating mudslide on the Nepal-China border unleashed catastrophic floods. The disaster occurred when a wall of mud and rock collapsed into a river, sending a torrent of water and debris through mountain towns and valleys.

Officials estimate that around 340 foreign tourists are among the more than 400 people unaccounted for. The affected region is a popular destination for trekkers and pilgrims. Specific reports indicate that two Irish nationals and twelve UK citizens, including a teenager, remain missing in Nepal's Rasuwa region.

Survivors recounted harrowing experiences as the flash floods struck. One survivor described a "huge gush of mud" engulfing his home, sweeping away his wife while he was rescued by helicopter hours later. The disaster has caused widespread destruction, washing away houses, roads, and power projects in Nepal, while authorities in Tibet fear major casualties after a mudslide hit a border crossing.

It was a huge gush of mud coming straight towards us. As it got closer, it kept rising higher and higher. When I saw it enter our home, I tried to grab my wife's hand and take her to the terrace. But she was swept away by the mud.
