Nepal floods leave 919 dead and nearly 4,800 missing

The provisional toll from floods near the Nepal-China border rose to 919 dead and 4,793 missing after figures from Nepal and China were combined. Nepal’s emergency management authority reported 903 deaths and 4,247 missing people on Aug. 31. Chinese state media reported 16 deaths and 546 missing on its side of the border.

Rescue teams intensified their efforts to locate about 3,000 missing people and evacuate survivors who remained isolated three days after the flooding. Authorities released video showing rescuers working at the Trishuli hydropower project in Nuwakot district, where people were trapped in tunnels.

At least 933 workers were believed to be trapped across about six hydropower projects in Nepal. More than 2,000 residents were missing in the districts of Nuwakot, Rasuwa and Makwanpur, according to the figures cited.

Authorities also had no news of 592 foreign nationals and the 933 employees and construction workers linked to hydropower plants and dam sites in the region. In neighboring India, officials in Uttar Pradesh said they had recovered 17 bodies believed to be victims of the floods. Those victims were not included in Nepal’s official toll, and identification efforts continued.
