Nepal landslides, floods kill 538; China reports 5 border deaths

Nepal's Disaster Management Authority confirmed 538 fatalities and 73 injuries following devastating floods triggered by a landslide in Tibet. The disaster, fueled by melting glaciers, has significantly impacted the region.

China Central Television reported an additional five deaths along the China-Nepal border. The flooding has affected an estimated 93,000 people, with roughly 1,000 individuals, including numerous foreign tourists, still unaccounted for.

A critical situation is unfolding as a lake formed by the landslide on the Nepal-China border shows signs of overflowing. This has forced a temporary suspension of rescue efforts and heightened fears of a potential dam failure. Residents in Nepal's Rasuwa district, near the Tibetan border, are evacuating to higher ground due to rapidly rising river levels.

The disaster struck on the morning of August 26, when an ice and rock avalanche caused a sudden surge in the Bhote Koshi River. The resulting mudflow inundated several villages, destroyed roads and hydroelectric facilities, and swept away a border post in China's Tibet Autonomous Region.
