Nepal Observes National Information Day to Mark RTI Act Anniversary

Nepal is celebrating National Information Day today, marking the anniversary of the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2064 BS. Various programs are being organized across the country to highlight the significance of information access and its role in a democratic society.

The RTI Act, which came into force on Bhadra 3, 2064 BS, empowers citizens with the right to seek and receive information concerning public affairs. Article 27 of Nepal's Constitution guarantees this fundamental right, obliging public agencies to be transparent and share information proactively. The Act is widely regarded as a crucial anti-corruption tool, essential for fostering good governance.

Advocates and researchers emphasize that the effective use of RTI not only helps in curbing financial irregularities within public institutions but also builds essential pillars of transparency and accountability. The National Information Commission, established by the government, plays a key role in promoting the use of RTI nationwide, including through youth training programs.

The Commission asserts that RTI is instrumental in empowering citizens and strengthening the foundations of sustainable development and a people-centric governance system. Since the Act's inception, numerous civil society organizations have actively engaged in training youth, launching awareness campaigns, filing information requests, and exposing irregularities, thereby contributing to a more informed and engaged citizenry.
