Nepal: Satellite images reveal the scale of destruction – Fears of hundreds dead

Catastrophic images are emerging from Nepal following deadly floods, where a 4.4 magnitude earthquake triggered a landslide. The landslide dammed a river, leading to a massive flood that swept away people, homes, and roads. Satellite images vividly capture the transformed landscape along the Nepal-China border, illustrating the violent impact of the rushing waters. Homes, roads, bridges, and infrastructure have been destroyed. Authorities report 160 deaths so far, with hundreds more missing. Police have identified bodies in several districts, including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan, Gorkha, Tanahun, and Nawalparasi. Additionally, 49 people are hospitalized with injuries. Over 3,300 police officers have been deployed to assist in the rescue and recovery efforts. Security camera footage from the Chinese side of the border shows people fleeing moments before a torrent of water, mud, and rocks inundated the area. In Nepal, search and rescue operations continue for hundreds of missing individuals, including over 130 Indians and citizens from the United States and Great Britain. Authorities are also concerned about the potential for another flood wave. A massive volume of debris remains accumulated on the riverbanks, raising fears that a new collapse could release even larger quantities of water and mud. Rescue operations are significantly challenged by the conditions; helicopters cannot reach some affected areas, and continuous rainfall keeps river levels high. China has mobilized hundreds of rescuers and dozens of vehicles to the Gyirong area, where the landslide caused severe damage to roads and communication and power networks.
