Nepal-Tibet floods leave at least 180 dead, over 1,300 missing

Devastating floods have swept through Nepal and the Tibet region, claiming at least 180 lives and leaving more than 1,300 people missing. Nepali police reported recovering 177 bodies, with an additional 823 individuals, including a significant number of foreign tourists, still unaccounted for within the country.

The scale of the disaster is immense, with entire communities reportedly destroyed by the torrents of water and debris. The floods, which raged for over 160 kilometers across Nepal, are believed to have been triggered by a glacial lake outburst, according to the USGS.

Among the missing are nationals from various countries, highlighting the international impact of the catastrophe. India, the United States, and Ukraine have the highest numbers of reported missing persons after Nepal. The Chinese government has also reported 260 foreign nationals missing in Tibet, though their nationalities remain unspecified.

Rescue efforts are underway, with helicopters seen assisting in affected areas. The disaster underscores the vulnerability of the Himalayan region to extreme weather events and the devastating consequences they can have on local populations and the tourism industry.
