NESREA shuts four Nasarawa facilities for environmental violations

Nigeria's National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has intensified its crackdown on environmental offenders, recently sealing four facilities in Nasarawa State.

The targeted facilities, ABZAT Quarry, Hoafong Mining Trading Company Ltd, Emono Venture, and Mivanyi Integrated Farms, were shut down for alleged pollution and failure to comply with environmental regulations. The enforcement operation was conducted by officials from NESREA’s Karu Operational Office.

This move is part of a continuing nationwide campaign by NESREA to compel industrial, mining, quarrying, and other operators to adhere to environmental laws. The agency aims to prevent activities that could endanger public health and degrade the environment, with a particular focus on Nasarawa State, where mining and quarrying have expanded significantly.

Concerns have been rising in Nasarawa over the environmental impact of these extractive activities, including air quality degradation, land and water contamination, and noise pollution. NESREA, mandated by law to enforce environmental standards, has increasingly used facility closures as a measure against operators who disregard environmental requirements.

The agency's enforcement actions have been consistent, with previous closures of numerous facilities in other states for similar violations. In September 2025, 29 facilities were sealed in Ekiti, Osun, and Ogun States. In February 2026, a quarry in Abuja was shut down following a fatal blasting incident. These successive actions underscore the government's commitment to balancing economic activities with environmental protection and community safety.
