Netanyahu Government Turning West Bank Into 'Powder Keg,' Warns Opposition Leader

Israeli opposition leader Yair Golan has issued a stark warning, stating that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government is transforming the occupied West Bank into a 'powder keg.' This grave assessment comes in the wake of an incident where illegal Jewish settlers, under the protection of the Israeli military, attacked the town of Tell near Nablus in the northern West Bank.

The settler attack resulted in the deaths of four Palestinians and injured four others, according to Palestinian sources. In a retaliatory incident, two Israelis were killed in a shooting when locals attempted to defend themselves against the assault, as reported by both Palestinian and Israeli sources. In response to these events, Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered large-scale military incursions across the occupied territory.

Golan, writing on the X platform, accused the government and its far-right ministers, Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir, of intentionally fostering a highly volatile situation in the West Bank. He asserted that illegal Jewish settler groups have systematically engaged in provocations, inflamed sentiments, and dragged the Israeli military and the nation into a broader confrontation over recent months.

"These actions exacerbate the danger rather than distancing civilians from the point of conflict," Golan stated. He further warned that Netanyahu and Katz are making the West Bank a 'powder keg,' thereby threatening Israel's own security. Golan concluded by cautioning that bloodshed will be the price of this escalating conflict, with Israeli soldiers bearing the brunt of the consequences stemming from irresponsible policies.
