Netizen slams influencer for 'confusing timeline' in BNT vaccine purchase dispute

A public dispute has erupted in Taiwan over the timeline and details of private organizations' procurement of BNT COVID-19 vaccines. Influencer Chen Yi asserted that only the Tzu Chi Foundation was defrauded in its vaccine purchase, unlike TSMC or Terry Gou.

However, netizen "Jaguar," formerly a Taipei city councilor, strongly criticized Chen Yi's remarks. He accused her of deliberately confusing the sequence of events to spread incorrect inferences and confuse the public. Jaguar detailed the timeline, noting that Tzu Chi signed its contract and paid for vaccines on June 9, while TSMC and Terry Gou's deal was announced on June 18 and their contract signed on July 12. Tzu Chi's contract with Fosun was signed on July 21.

Jaguar clarified that when Tzu Chi paid, the government had not yet authorized private purchases. He explained that the government's stance was that vaccines could not be obtained through brokers, and Tzu Chi's payment secured a "lonely" outcome, as the vaccines ultimately came from the July 21 contract, not the broker. He emphasized that the government had opened a channel for private entities to purchase vaccines, requiring them to be donated to the Central Epidemic Command Center for distribution.
