Neusiedler See Nears Historic Low Amid Heat and Drought

The Neusiedler See, a prominent lake in Austria, is facing an unprecedented water crisis, nearing a historic low. Persistent heatwaves and drought conditions have drastically reduced its water level, causing significant concern.

The lake's current water level stands at 115.05 meters above the Adriatic Sea. This is merely ten centimeters above the lowest recorded level for mid-August, which dates back to 1965. The record low for that month was 114.95 meters. Compared to the previous year, the lake has receded by 25 centimeters, and it is 37 centimeters below the long-term average. The absolute lowest point in the last 61 years was recorded in October 2022 at 114.87 meters, 18 centimeters lower than the current level.

Despite the alarming water levels, recreational activities like swimming, sailing, and surfing are still possible on the main lake. However, the situation is more critical in the Darscho, a sodic lake within the Seewinkel region. This smaller body of water has become too shallow to sustain its fish population. Earlier this week, carp were rescued from Darscho and relocated to nearby ponds to prevent further loss.

The declining water levels at Neusiedler See highlight the severe impact of climate change on natural water bodies in the region. While the lake remains a popular destination for recreation, the ecological challenges faced by its smaller connected waters signal a broader environmental concern.
