New 500-bed building expands Dhaka hospital's capacity to 1,000 beds

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated a new 500-bed building at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in Dhaka's Agargaon on Tuesday. The inauguration, marked by the unveiling of a plaque, signifies a major expansion for the hospital, increasing its total bed capacity to 1,000 and establishing it as one of Bangladesh's largest specialized centers for neurological treatment.

The newly constructed 15-storey building features three basement levels for parking and services, with the upper 12 floors dedicated to patient care. It houses 40 ICU beds, 20 HDU beds, 24 post-operative beds, and 112 cabins. A significant addition is the 100-bed specialized trauma unit designed for patients with brain and spinal injuries, equipped with round-the-clock operation theaters featuring advanced German technology.

The new building raises the hospital’s total bed capacity to 1,000, making it one of the country’s largest specialised centres for neurological treatment.

This facility boasts several firsts for a government healthcare institution in the country, including a central air-conditioning system. It is also equipped with 62 ventilators, a catheterization laboratory, two MRI machines, two CT scanners, an advanced autoclave system, a solid waste disposal system, and a separate oxygen plant. Escalators have been installed to improve patient mobility, particularly for those with severe injuries.

Doctors at the hospital report that stroke patients form the largest group seeking treatment, followed by those with brain and spinal injuries. The institute also manages a range of other neurological conditions, including Parkinson's disease, dementia, Guillain-Barré syndrome, epilepsy, and hydrocephalus. The original National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital was established in 2006, and this new building, inaugurated on the 81st birth anniversary of his mother, represents a significant step in expanding neurological healthcare services.
