New Ambassador Appointed to Nepal Amidst Flood Crisis

South Korea has appointed Park Jae-kyung, currently serving as ambassador to Zimbabwe, to the vacant post of ambassador to Nepal. The decision comes as Nepal grapples with a devastating flash flood, raising concerns about the capacity of the South Korean mission to respond effectively.

The South Korean embassy in Nepal is a small mission with only six personnel dispatched from Korea. The ambassadorial position had been vacant since early August, operating under an acting charge d'affaires. This lack of leadership was highlighted as a critical issue when nine South Koreans went missing and three others, including a site manager for Doosan Enerbility and two embassy staff, were stranded following the disaster.

Park Jae-kyung, who began his public service career in 1994, brings extensive diplomatic experience, including previous roles as Minister-Counselor in Indonesia and Director-General for ASEAN at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as Minister-Counselor in Canada. His appointment is seen as a move to bolster the crisis response capabilities of the embassy.

A government rapid response team arrived in Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, on August 27 (local time). This team is expected to utilize helicopters to reach the affected areas and provide assistance. The swift appointment of Ambassador Park suggests an immediate focus on managing the fallout from the floods and supporting affected South Korean nationals.
