New artistic features could decorate Klaipėda buildings

Klaipėda could begin showing its maritime identity on building facades, not only during festivals and special events. The proposal, presented by the Lithuanian Maritime Captains Association, received a favorable response from the city’s maritime affairs working group.

Jurgita Gudelevičienė, a specialist from Klaipėda Municipality’s Urban Planning Department, said maritime-themed artistic elements could strengthen the city’s character while restoring cultural memory. They could also make public spaces more welcoming for residents and visitors.

We believe that this initiative could play a significant role in strengthening Klaipėda’s maritime identity. It would also restore cultural memory, while making public spaces pleasant and welcoming for residents and visitors.

The proposal would initially focus on a small number of sites. One, two or three buildings could serve as examples for expanding the initiative. Tiltų Street was mentioned as one possible location, while the facades of schools and other educational institutions are also being considered.

The city may connect the decorations with renovation projects already under way, particularly work involving community centers and schools. Officials also believe that at least part of the cost could come from programs supporting cultural and artistic projects. The association is expected to submit its first specific proposals on which buildings to decorate and what the designs should include.
