New AW189 Helicopter Boosts Malaysia's Maritime Enforcement Capabilities

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (Maritim Malaysia) has significantly boosted its operational capacity with the acceptance of its first AW189 medium-lift helicopter. This new asset is expected to enhance the agency's capabilities in maritime enforcement, surveillance, and search and rescue (Carilamat) operations within the nation's waters.

The acceptance of the first helicopter from four new aerial assets reflects the government's commitment to strengthening national security and sovereignty.

Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, the Minister of Home Affairs, stated that the delivery of this first helicopter, out of a total of four new aerial assets, underscores the government's commitment to strengthening national security and sovereignty. The acquisition of these four helicopters was approved under the Fourth Rolling Plan of the 11th Malaysia Plan, with a five-year contract valued at RM529 million, running from January 19, 2024, to January 18, 2029.

Saifuddin highlighted that the enhanced aerial capabilities will benefit various maritime stakeholders, including fishermen, coastal communities, the shipping industry, tourism sector, and all users of Malaysian waters. Key benefits include improved safety standards and a more robust response capability for maritime emergencies.

The AW189 helicopter boasts impressive specifications, including an operational range of up to 1,166 kilometers, a maximum speed of 313 kilometers per hour, and an endurance of up to five hours. It is capable of operating day and night in diverse weather conditions and can accommodate a crew of five along with up to 14 passengers. These features will enable Maritim Malaysia to respond more swiftly and flexibly, particularly for operations in remote offshore areas.

This helicopter can increase Maritim Malaysia's capabilities in enforcement, aerial surveillance, search and rescue, medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), and special operations.

This modernization effort is part of the government's ongoing strategy to equip Maritim Malaysia with state-of-the-art assets, ensuring the agency remains relevant to current operational demands. Saifuddin emphasized that by investing in modern assets, competent personnel, and advanced technology, Maritim Malaysia will continue to serve as the nation's frontline defense in safeguarding maritime security and Malaysia's sovereignty.
