New Book Offers Foreign Students Insight into Korean Society Through Media

In recognition of the burgeoning population of international students in South Korea, now exceeding 250,000, a new academic resource has been released to bridge cultural and informational gaps. Titled 'Korean Society Through the Media for Foreigners,' this book aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of South Korean society, tailored specifically for those navigating the country as students or residents.

The initiative was spearheaded by professors Shin Seon-jong, Yoon Hee-gak, and Lee Young-hee from Pusan University of Foreign Studies. Drawing upon years of teaching experience and extensive research, they have curated content that addresses the most pertinent aspects of Korean life for foreigners. The book delves into popular culture phenomena like K-pop and K-dramas, alongside practical necessities such as public transportation, telecommunications, healthcare systems, and urban living.

What sets this publication apart is its innovative approach, integrating media literacy principles. Each chapter is supplemented with references to current news articles, clips from popular Korean dramas, and links to expert analysis videos. This multi-modal strategy allows international students to engage with Korean society through the very media that shapes it, fostering a deeper, more nuanced comprehension. Furthermore, a dedicated vocabulary guide provides English translations for challenging Korean terms, making the content accessible even to those with limited Korean language proficiency.

Authored by two former journalists and a Korean language education specialist, the book is structured for higher education levels. It covers a broad spectrum of societal themes, including South Korea's economic development, family structures, generational dynamics, and even its unique DNA heritage.
