New CDS, navy chief to take charge today

India's military leadership is set for a significant transition as General NS Raja Subramani prepares to take charge as the country's new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) on Sunday. He succeeds General Anil Chauhan, who retired on Saturday. Concurrently, Admiral Krishna Swaminathan will assume the position of Navy Chief, replacing Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, who retires on Sunday.

These appointments arrive at a critical juncture for India's armed forces, which are actively pursuing theaterization. This long-awaited reform aims to integrate the military's diverse resources and capabilities to enhance preparedness for future conflicts. General Chauhan, during his tenure, guided the defense forces through a crucial phase of transformation and integration, leaving a legacy of service and excellence, according to the defense ministry.

The incoming CDS, General Subramani, is expected to accelerate the establishment of joint services commands, a cornerstone of the theaterization drive. These commands are envisioned to consolidate military elements, assets, and personnel from the three services under a unified commander-in-chief. General Chauhan had recently submitted a detailed proposal to the defense minister to advance theaterization, outlining a model that includes a China-centric northern theater command in Lucknow, a Pakistan-centric western theater command in Jaipur, and a maritime theater command in Thiruvananthapuram.

General Subramani, an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy, was commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles in 1985. Admiral Swaminathan, also an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, has a distinguished career that includes studies at the Joint Services Command and Staff College in the UK and the US Naval War College. His tenure begins as India finalizes a substantial deal to domestically build next-generation conventional submarines.
