New Delhi Diverts Flights, Sees Flooding Under Red Alert for Heavy Rains

New Delhi experienced significant flooding on Monday as heavy monsoon rains inundated several areas, with residents seen wading through waist-deep water. The downpours also led to the diversion of at least 15 flights, while authorities maintained a partial red alert due to storms and strong winds.

International and domestic flights were rerouted to nearby cities such as Jaipur, Chandigarh, and Lucknow, according to airport authorities cited by the Indian agency IANS. IndiGo, the country's largest airline, informed passengers via X about the impact of the adverse weather on flight schedules, assuring them that efforts were being made to ensure safe and smooth travel.

Other major carriers, including Air India, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air, also alerted their passengers to possible delays and operational disruptions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for several parts of Delhi, forecasting intense rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and wind gusts up to 60 kilometers per hour.

The IMD also warned of heavy rains in other Indian states, including Uttarakhand, Odisha, and Telangana, where orange alerts are in effect. The monsoon season, typically from June to September, is crucial for India's agriculture and water supply but frequently causes floods, landslides, and road blockages across the country each year.
