New development in Girne ferry disaster: Nine detainees sent to court

Nine people detained after the passenger-ship disaster off Girne have been brought before a court as investigators widen the case beyond the vessel’s crew. Eight people died in the accident off the coast of the Northern Cyprus city.

Authorities issued arrest orders for 16 people as part of an investigation into suspected deaths caused by negligence. The first nine detainees appeared in court, while the hearing was adjourned until 11:30 a.m. so the remaining seven could also be brought before the judge.

The investigation is examining the captain, crew members, company officials and port personnel. Journalist Onur Evrensel said more than 100 people had already provided statements and that camera recordings showing the ship’s movements were being reviewed.

Early crew statements reportedly said that the ship’s bow had broken off. Technical examinations are continuing to establish the precise cause of the disaster.

Investigators are also reviewing the ship’s technical condition before departure, its inspections and its operating permits. Evrensel said the vessel had received the necessary approvals from Türk Loydu, the Port Authority and the Meteorological Service. Search-and-rescue work and the investigation remain ongoing.

The investigation is not limited only to the ship’s crew. The captain, crew, company officials and port personnel are among the 16 people at the center of the investigation.
