New educational center to be built in Piriápolis to ease overcrowding

Piriápolis, Uruguay, is set to receive a new educational facility, Liceo N°2, aimed at addressing the significant overcrowding issues at the town's sole existing high school, Liceo N°1.

The National Public Education Administration (ANEP) unveiled the preliminary project for the new school, which has been a long-awaited development, reportedly postponed for over a decade. The proposed center will primarily focus on the "Ciclo Básico," the initial stage of secondary education.

Authorities estimate the investment for this new building will exceed $120 million Uruguayan pesos. The project is slated for bidding in October 2026, with construction anticipated to commence in March 2027. The school could potentially open its doors to students by early 2028.

The construction of Liceo N°2 is expected to significantly improve the current situation at Liceo N°1, which currently struggles with a high student-to-classroom ratio. ANEP President Pablo Caggiani indicated that while the new school will handle the Basic Cycle, Liceo N°1 will undergo improvements and eventually focus on "Educación Media Superior," the higher stage of secondary education. This strategic division aims to optimize educational resources and provide a better learning environment for all students in Piriápolis.
