New elite Vienna neighborhood becomes crime target as residents report people sleeping on terraces

Neues Landgut was designed as a modern Vienna neighborhood with thousands of homes, an education campus and a large library. Some residents now say daily life has fallen short of that vision.

Residents around Elisabeth-Sundt-Platz and in the development’s courtyards report rubbish, drug use and different forms of crime. They say homeless people have sometimes stayed in private gardens and terraces, with photographs allegedly showing people creating sleeping places there.

A group of residents has begun documenting the problems and seeking a response from police and the Favoriten district. They say they do not want to damage the neighborhood’s reputation, but want to address the problems before they become a permanent part of everyday life.

Residents claim they recorded more than 200 incidents since March 2025. Their list includes noise, pollution, break-ins in basement areas and damage to cars. Bicycle theft has also affected employees of Waterdrop, which has operated at the nearby Gösserhalle since 2023. Residents at the nearby Willi-Resetarits-Hof have also reported rubbish and break-ins.

Concern increased after a confrontation at a football field in May 2025. According to the report, a 26-year-old man injured a 34-year-old man with a knife.
