New England residents saved $130 million in energy costs during the 2026 June-July heatwave, all due to rooftop solar panels

New England residents collectively saved between $130 million and $149 million in energy costs during the intense heatwave that gripped the region from June 28 to July 4, 2026. This significant financial relief was largely attributed to the widespread deployment of rooftop solar panels.

According to a new report by Acadia Center, distributed solar projects across New England generated more than six gigawatts of electricity during the heatwave. This substantial contribution helped to offset the rising costs associated with increased energy demand during the extreme temperatures.

The report highlights the critical role of solar power in stabilizing energy markets and providing savings for consumers. On July 2 alone, solar arrays generated enough power to save consumers between $39 million and $54 million. Notably, on that same afternoon, solar contributed more electricity to the regional grid than the entire nuclear fleet operating in New England.
