New Ferry Route Connects Poland and Germany, Boosting Cross-Border Tourism

A new cross-border ferry service is set to launch, connecting Szczecin in Poland with Gartz in Germany along the Western Oder River. This initiative is part of the Polish-German project "Cross Oder," which aims to boost tourism and protect the natural environment in the Lower Oder Valley. The water tram, operated by the municipal company Żegluga Szczecińska in collaboration with the municipality of Gartz, will begin its summer service on July 4th.

Departing from Bulwar Chrobrego in Szczecin every Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m., the vessel "Sedina" is designed to carry up to 140 passengers, with dedicated space for bicycles. The route offers a scenic journey through the picturesque landscapes of the Oder River, including stops in Mescherin and Gartz. The return trip from Gartz is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., with arrival back in Szczecin at 6:15 p.m.

Organizers highlighted the route's appeal to cycling tourists who travel along the Oder-Neisse, Blue Velo, and Western Lake District trails. Passengers can learn about the Międzyodrze area's history and natural treasures through an audio guide available in Polish, German, and English, as well as a smartphone application called ExploreODER. The Lower Oder Valley is recognized as one of Central Europe's most valuable natural areas, boasting unique aquatic ecosystems, extensive floodplains, and rich biodiversity, particularly for birdwatchers, with up to 230 species recorded.

Ireneusz Nowak, president of Żegluga Szczecińska Turystyka Wydarzenia, emphasized the goal of showcasing the Oder's scenic beauty and leveraging its cross-border tourism potential. The project revives historical connections to the region, which was once utilized for agriculture and tourism. The ferry service aims to provide a unique perspective on the natural and cultural heritage of the border region, making it accessible to both locals and international visitors.
