New Forensic Shelter in Iztapalapa to Hold 2,700 Bodies

Officials have inspected the construction progress of a new Temporary Forensic Shelter Center in Iztapalapa, Mexico City. The facility, located within the San Lorenzo Tezonco Civil Cemetery, is designed to significantly enhance the processes for identifying missing persons. Raúl Basulto, the Secretary of Works, oversaw the inspection, confirming the project's advancement.

The center is engineered to accommodate up to 2,700 bodies, providing dignified conditions for operation, care, and control. This substantial capacity aims to streamline the often-overwhelmed forensic system and offer a more systematic approach to managing unidentified remains. The initiative is a key component of the capital's efforts to address the ongoing issue of disappearances and provide answers to grieving families.

In addition to the shelter's construction, the project encompasses a comprehensive rehabilitation of both the perimeter and interior of the San Lorenzo Tezonco Civil Cemetery. These improvements are intended to create a more respectful and functional environment for the important work carried out at the site.
