New Greek IDs: Travel, Gov.gr Wallet, and Personal Number rules explained

Greece is introducing new identity cards that incorporate biometric data, mirroring the specifications found in passports. This move aims to streamline electronic checks at entry and exit points, aligning with European standards and facilitating smoother travel.

A significant change concerns the validity of older identification documents. As of August 3, the traditional blue Greek ID cards will no longer be recognized as valid travel documents for international journeys. However, these older IDs will remain in use for identification and transactions within Greece until September 25, 2027.

The new biometric IDs are designed to have a 10-year validity period. This duration is based on the fact that biometric characteristics change over time, necessitating periodic updates similar to passport renewals. For individuals who obtained their new ID before the personal number system was fully implemented, this unique identifier will be added during their next ID renewal. The personal number itself is based on an individual's tax number (AFM) and can be used when interacting with public services if other identification numbers are forgotten.

During the process of issuing new IDs, discrepancies in civil registry data, such as place of birth or details related to former municipalities, may be identified. The General Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Athanasios Balerbas, stated that these issues can be rectified with the appropriate certificates, offering citizens an opportunity to update their records for easier future transactions with public administration and for international travel.
