New Life for Ibexes: Stuttgart Animals Reintroduced to Austrian Alps

Two female Alpine ibexes, born in 2024 at Stuttgart's Wilhelma Zoo, have begun a new life in the Austrian Alps. Their release is part of a collaborative conservation effort aimed at preserving and strengthening the regional Alpine ibex population.

These ibexes were released alongside six others from various European zoos. The initiative, detailed by the Zoological-Botanical Garden Stuttgart, seeks to bolster the numbers of this species in the Alps. Although Alpine ibexes are no longer considered endangered, their populations historically faced near extinction in the 19th century due to hunting.

Thanks to stringent protection measures, the Alpine ibex population has rebounded to approximately 50,000 individuals. However, these animals often live in isolated groups, limiting natural interbreeding between different populations. To address this, reintroduction programs continue to be vital.

Ulrike Rademacher, the zoo's hoofed animal coordinator, explained the importance of these releases. "We continue to release animals to close population gaps and ensure genetic diversity in the stocks," she stated. This ongoing effort is crucial for maintaining the long-term health and viability of the Alpine ibex.
