New Mexico sues Justice Department for access to Epstein documents

The U.S. state of New Mexico has filed a lawsuit against the Justice Department, demanding access to unredacted court documents concerning Jeffrey Epstein. New Mexico alleges that the department is hindering its investigation into the late sex offender by withholding these crucial documents. This legal action escalates the politically charged dispute over the Justice Department's Epstein files, a matter that has troubled the Trump administration. The state's investigation holds the potential for international consequences, particularly if it results in identifying and prosecuting individuals suspected of sexual abuse against girls and women at Epstein's Zorro Ranch in New Mexico. New Mexico's Democratic leadership reopened its investigation into Epstein in February, requesting the unredacted documents to identify visitors and employees at the ranch who may have participated in or witnessed the crimes. The lawsuit states that the federal government's inaction not only delays the investigation but also prolongs and exacerbates the suffering of survivors. The Justice Department responded by asserting it is neither obligated nor permitted to release information that could identify victims. Despite the investigation being over five months old, New Mexico's Attorney General Raul Torrez has yet to announce any findings, stating that indictments are pending the review of the unredacted documents. Jeffrey Epstein died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal charges of sex trafficking and abuse of minors.
