New minister vows to tackle corruption, land grabs in Uganda's local governments

Justine Nameere, the newly appointed State Minister for Local Government, has pledged a robust crackdown on corruption and land injustices within local government structures. As the Woman Member of Parliament for Masaka City, Nameere stated her commitment to ensuring the equal application of the law for all Ugandans, with a particular focus on protecting the vulnerable.

I want to ensure that there is equal application of the law for all Ugandans. The poor should not suffer simply because they do not have money or influence.

Speaking on NBS Television's Barometer talk show, Nameere articulated her vision for fairness in legal enforcement, especially concerning land disputes and evictions. She criticized the existing system where wealthier individuals often receive preferential treatment, leaving poorer communities helpless. "We have seen situations where the rich are protected while the poor are left helpless during land evictions and disputes. That must stop," she declared.

The minister also targeted corruption within local governments, highlighting the alleged sale of jobs and the mismanagement or theft of government drugs as critical issues. Nameere emphasized that employment opportunities should be merit-based, not influenced by corruption. Regarding the health sector, she called for strict verification procedures before the destruction of expired medicines to ensure transparency and prevent misuse.

Furthermore, Nameere committed to addressing extortion in government schools, ensuring that no child is denied education due to illegal charges imposed by administrators. Her remarks follow a recent cabinet reshuffle by President Yoweri Museveni, aimed at enhancing service delivery and accountability across government sectors.
