New National University Approved in Arequipa, Peru, to Offer 15 Professional Degrees

A new national university, the Juan Velasco Alvarado National Agrarian University, is set to open in the Majes district of Arequipa, Peru, following its approval by the Congress and promulgation by the government. Published on June 10 in the official gazette El Peruano, Law N.° 32639 establishes this new higher education center.

The university will be structured with faculties, professional schools, research units, and postgraduate programs. Its organization will be defined later. The law also designates the institution as a budgetary entity, authorizing the Ministry of Economy and Finance to facilitate necessary fund transfers from the Ministry of Education's budget.

Located in Majes, a district recognized for its significant agro-industrial, agro-export, and scientific potential, the university aims to drive professional training, applied research, and technological development in the agrarian sector. Congressman Segundo Montalvo highlighted the initiative as a "strategic and social necessity" for southern Peru.

The planned academic offerings include 15 professional degrees across three faculties: Engineering (with specializations like Agricultural, Forest, Environmental, and Agroindustrial Engineering, among others), Economic Sciences (including Business Administration, Accounting, and Agroindustrial Marketing), and Social Sciences (focusing on Education). The specific programs will be determined by an organizing commission based on local, regional, national, and international labor market demands.

Funding for the university's implementation and operation will be sourced from directly collected resources, donations, legacies, canon funds, and grants managed from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Education, the Arequipa Regional Government, and local municipalities. These funds will be integrated into the budget for the fiscal year following the law's approval.
