New Nigerian Army Divisions, Bold Reforms and the Contiguity Question

President Bola Tinubu's administration is undertaking a significant restructuring of the Nigerian Army, expanding its divisions from eight to 12. This ambitious reform aims to decentralize command, bolster security, and expedite military response times to emerging threats across the nation.

The expansion will see four new divisional headquarters established in Makurdi (5 Division), Ilorin (9 Division), Jalingo (10 Division), and Benin City (83 Division). Complementing this structural change, President Tinubu has also approved the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel to ensure these new commands are adequately staffed and capable of functioning effectively.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, described the move as a "landmark" step in reshaping Nigeria's security architecture. The reforms are intended to enhance protection for critical national infrastructure, such as pipelines and power installations, and sharpen counter-insurgency operations. A key promise is faster military response, with divisions located closer to affected communities expected to reduce troop arrival times from days to hours.

However, the ambitious plan faces scrutiny. Questions are being raised regarding the availability of sufficient manpower, adequate resources, and effective logistics. A particular point of concern is the geographical contiguity of the states assigned to each new command, prompting debate on how effectively these reforms can achieve their stated objectives and deliver on promises of improved security nationwide.
