New Norwegian King Haakon VIII to swear allegiance Tuesday

Norway is preparing to welcome its new monarch, King Haakon VIII, who will formally swear allegiance to the constitution this coming Tuesday.

The 53-year-old Crown Prince automatically ascended to the throne upon the death of his father, King Harald V, who passed away at the age of 89. The ceremony will take place in the Norwegian Parliament, where King Haakon VIII will deliver a brief address.

King Harald V's passing marks the end of a 35-year reign, during which he was a popular and respected figure. Following his death, the Norwegian government declared a period of national mourning, which will continue until the King's funeral. The date for the funeral has not yet been announced.

Thousands of Norwegians gathered in Oslo, braving the rain, to pay their respects to the late King. His coffin was transported from the hospital to the Royal Palace, where more mourners have been laying flowers in tribute to their long-serving monarch. The parliamentary swearing-in ceremony will be broadcast live on television for the public to witness.
