New Nuclear Power Plant Near Malmö and Copenhagen Advances with State Support Application

Plans for a new nuclear power plant near Malmö and Copenhagen have moved a step closer, as the company Nordic Baseload Power has applied for state support to construct two boiling water reactors at Barsebäck.

The proposed site in Barsebäck, Sweden, is the same location where a previous nuclear power plant operated for many years, encountering substantial public resistance, particularly from Denmark. The original Barsebäck plant consisted of two reactors, which were decommissioned in 1999 and 2005.

Nordic Baseload Power aims to have the first reactor operational before 2035, contingent on receiving necessary permits by 2029. The application for state funding is now under review by the Swedish Ministry of Finance. A decision on whether the project will receive support is anticipated in early 2027.

This development comes amid a broader discussion across Europe about energy security. Swedish Minister for Financial Markets, Niklas Wykman, stated that "Sweden needs more stable electricity production" and welcomed the continued interest in investing in new nuclear power. This application is the fourth submitted since the Swedish government opened the possibility for companies to seek approval for new nuclear reactors last August.
