New Operation Targets Güzelbahçe Municipality; Four Detained in Corruption Probe

A new operation has been launched targeting corruption within the Güzelbahçe Municipality in Izmir, Turkey. The operation, coordinated by the Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, focuses on charges of "forming an organization to commit crimes," "bribery," and "extortion."

The investigation has led to the detention of four more individuals. Among those arrested are Ahmet Günay, the son of the already detained Mayor Mustafa Günay; his wife, İmran Kübra Günay; and the mayor's brother, Hüseyin Günay. This expands the probe that initially saw the mayor taken into custody.

Following the initial operation on May 26, 2026, an analysis of data from the MASAK (Financial Crimes Investigation Board) identified a total of seven suspects believed to be involved in organized bribery and extortion. While one suspect was already in custody, the recent detentions bring the total number of apprehended individuals to five.

Authorities are currently continuing efforts to locate and apprehend the two remaining suspects who are still at large. The investigation aims to dismantle the alleged corrupt network within the municipality.
