New play 'Sudhakar's New Moon' explores political disillusionment in Nepal

Kathmandu is set to host the debut production of Vulture Eye Productions, a new independent theatre collective. The play, titled ‘Sudhakar’s New Moon,’ will run at Sadhana Theatre until September 6.

Written and directed by Mukti, the play delves into the genre of magical realism. It examines how individuals' emotions, thoughts, and personal identity are influenced and altered by their surrounding conditions. The original story concept comes from Sagar Dahal, who also stars as the titular character, Sudhakar.

Mukti explained that the play emerged from a persistent sense of disillusionment with Nepal's political transformations. The play's core inquiry revolves around whether the current political power in Nepal is fundamentally different from those that preceded it. "The question of whether this newest force is simply the old one wearing a new face is what inspired me to write this play," Mukti added. Beyond this central political theme, ‘Sudhakar’s New Moon’ also probes the complexities of individual greed and morality.
