New Power Failure Hits ISSSTE Hospital in Hermosillo; Patient Transfer Urged

The General Hospital “Dr. Fernando Ocaranza” of the ISSSTE in Hermosillo suffered another electrical failure on Friday, reportedly caused by a transformer explosion. The incident left various areas of the hospital without power and air conditioning, exacerbating existing concerns about the facility's infrastructure.

This latest failure occurs at a hospital serving over 200,000 beneficiaries, which has recently faced significant criticism. Workers, patients, and unions have reported ongoing issues including infrastructure problems, flooding, malfunctioning air conditioning systems, and operational deficiencies that they claim put medical care at risk.

Protesters from the Sonoran Movement of Education Workers reported that the hospital was without electricity and air conditioning. They urged authorities to consider transferring patients to other medical institutions to prevent a major emergency. Reports from the scene indicated that an explosion sound preceded the outage, followed by smoke emanating from the electrical infrastructure area. The emergency generator activated, powering only critical areas.

This new contingency follows closely on the heels of similar failures just two weeks prior, which affected consultation rooms, hospitalization areas, and post-surgery recovery spaces. The recurring problems have led to protests demanding comprehensive intervention at the hospital. Union organizations have even called for federal government involvement and a presidential visit to assess the facility's condition. The ISSSTE has not yet issued an official statement regarding the cause of Friday's failure or an estimated timeline for restoring full services.
