New 'Red Lady' Jackfruit Variety Offers Sweet Cantaloupe Flavor, Easier Handling for Taiwan Farmers

Taiwanese farmers are finding a new sweet spot with a novel red jackfruit variety that boasts a crisp texture and a flavor profile akin to cantaloupe. Developed by farmer Gong Taian in Pingtung County's Jiuru Township, the 'Hong Niang' (Red Lady) jackfruit is poised to revitalize interest in a fruit traditionally native to Southeast Asia and India, which has struggled for widespread acceptance in Taiwan.

Traditional jackfruit, while nutritious, presents several hurdles for consumers and producers alike. Its flesh secretes a highly adhesive white latex, making preparation messy and time-consuming. Furthermore, the fresh fruit has a limited shelf life and is difficult to process, contributing to its low market penetration despite its health benefits. Gong Taian's innovation directly tackles these issues.

The 'Hong Niang' variety is red, sweeter than regular jackfruit, and tastes like cantaloupe and fresh milk with a crisp texture and good mouthfeel. Everyone who has tried it finds it more delicious and has a higher acceptance rate. Especially in handling, it's simpler, with less gum than regular jackfruit, so it's not sticky and difficult to handle.

The 'Hong Niang' variety distinguishes itself with its vibrant red flesh, a higher sweetness level than conventional jackfruit, and a distinct taste described as having notes of cantaloupe and even a hint of fresh milk. Crucially, it produces less of the sticky sap, simplifying handling and preparation. This improved taste and ease of use have led to significantly higher consumer acceptance.

While the 'Hong Niang' jackfruit matures about a month later than its yellow counterpart and yields slightly smaller fruits, these are still comparable in size to a large watermelon. Gong Taian believes that by significantly improving upon the drawbacks of traditional jackfruit, his new variety can boost consumer willingness to try it and offer farmers a promising new crop option. The development opens a new avenue for jackfruit cultivation and promotion in Taiwan.
