New regional era beyond terror

Türkiye is solidifying its role as a regional power, extending its influence beyond national borders to foster stability in neighboring states. A key internal challenge has been the persistent threat posed by the PKK terrorist organization, which, despite being weakened within Turkey, maintains a presence in parts of Iraq and Syria.

The narrative suggests a shift in regional dynamics, particularly in Syria. The YPG and its affiliates, once perceived as strong, were reportedly defeated by the Syrian National Army in recent clashes, demonstrating their diminished capacity. This period coincided with a significant declaration by Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, who recognized Syria's Kurds as equal and full citizens. This move aims to eliminate the need for separatist movements and secure basic rights for the Kurdish population.

Following these developments, the YPG announced its dissolution and integration into the Syrian national state. Notably, one of the group's leaders, Ferhat Abdi Şahin, is set to become an adviser to al-Sharaa, signifying a move towards reconciliation and a departure from the adversarial policies of the past. This integration signals a new era in Syria, where Arabs, Kurds, and Turkmens are expected to coexist as equal partners in a unified national identity.

On the Turkish side, parliament has ratified framework legislation on counterterrorism, and a specialized commission has been established to oversee the process. The commission's inaugural meeting, chaired by Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz, highlights Ankara's commitment to addressing the issue comprehensively.
