New Rock Musical to Premiere in Mohács for 500th Anniversary of Historic Battle

To commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács, the Budapest Operetta Theatre will present a new rock musical titled "Mindig itt leszünk... Mohács 500" (We Will Always Be Here... Mohács 500). The premiere is scheduled for August 29 in the main square of Mohács, a significant historical site.

This event is part of an extensive "Mohács 500" program series organized across Hungary. The initiative seeks to re-examine the historical significance of the battle, which occurred on August 29, 1526. The commemoration aims to offer a fresh perspective on this pivotal moment in Hungarian history.

Complementing the theatrical production, the National Heritage Institute (NÖRI) has launched the "Mohács 500" website. This platform serves as a knowledge base, showcasing recent research findings in history, archaeology, and anthropology related to the battle. It also provides updates on the anniversary program and related events, catering to both academic and general audiences interested in the period.

Furthermore, a traveling exhibition titled "Mohács 500 – Exploring the Past on New Paths" is touring the country. This exhibition, available in Hungarian and English, challenges the traditional view of the battle as solely a national tragedy. It incorporates the latest scientific research to illuminate the geopolitical context of the Jagiellonian Kingdom of Hungary, its role in defending Christian Europe, the events of the campaign, and the subsequent historical developments. The exhibition also delves into how the memory of the battle has evolved over the past five centuries.
