New support mechanisms for Polish local governments announced

Poland's National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOŚiGW) is preparing to introduce several new support instruments for local governments in the third and fourth quarters of 2026. These initiatives aim to bolster environmental protection and energy efficiency efforts at the municipal level.

A significant focus will be placed on supporting "green municipalities" – local authorities that have established or expanded nature reserves or national parks since 2024. This support includes a new program, "Space for Nature. Part 5. Green Municipalities – Focusing on Biodiversity," alongside preferential terms for the "Water and Wastewater Management in Agglomerations" program and planned assistance for energy efficiency renovations of buildings.

Support will cover hospitals, schools, and residential buildings. Thanks to these investments, buildings will consume less energy, which will translate into lower heating costs, better thermal comfort, and improved air quality.

Additionally, NFOŚiGW plans to announce three calls for applications this year funded by the Modernization Fund, totaling 3.5 billion PLN for improving energy efficiency in buildings. This funding will benefit hospitals, schools, and residential buildings, leading to reduced energy consumption, lower heating costs, improved thermal comfort, and better air quality.

The fund will also support rural residents through a new program enabling the modernization of multi-family buildings, including heat source replacements and the installation of renewable energy sources. This will be channeled through provincial funds to support investments by housing communities and cooperatives in rural areas. Technical assistance, including advisory services for project preparation and tender procedures, will also be available.
